South Island Regional Hui 2023

We had an amazing time at our South Island Regional Hui last weekend in Timaru.

We were hosted by the awesome team at South Canterbury Eco Centre at their beautiful new centre. It was a great hui with people from our six Hubs across Te Waipounamu, with lots of learning, exchange, and collaboration opportunities.

As part of our programme, there were some great presentations (including one by Liz from the Community Trust of Mid and South Canterbury); we got to learn about the amazing sustainable solutions applied in the building of South Canterbury Eco Centre, visit their project The Crows Nest (a well-developed recycle and reuse shop); had a lecture by Ron from Raptor Experience, where we made friends with a hāku and a ruru, and learnt more about this important awareness and preservation project; took a very rich guided-tour at Te Ana Māori Rock Art Centre, where we saw some unique rock paintings and learnt more about the Māori whakapapa; and enjoyed a walk guided by Rhys E Taylor, SCEC trustee, through Otipua Wetlands, a restorative project next to the centre. What a weekend!

Big mihi to our hosts and to all who joined us 😀

It feels great to be a part of this awesome group of people. I’ve come away feeling more inspired and connected. I definitely feel it has helped with my capacity as I feel that my work is a part of a greater collective good.
