Get ready for Strengthening Communities Hui 2023

Last year’s Strengthening Communities Hui took place at Lake Karapiro, Waikato region.

Our annual gathering with Community Energy Network and Zero Waste Network members and friends is happening in Ōtepoti Dunedin between 19 and 22 November.

Every year, our three networks get together for a few days to connect and exchange experiences. On its 6th edition, this year’s hui will be hosted by our e hoa Aukaha, under the theme ‘Catalyst for Collective Action’.

With the theme “regional connections”, last year’s hui brought our three networks’ members together to explore potential collaboration opportunities at a regional level. At this edition, we want our members and friends to think about ways to influence policy, scale up our projects and boost our climate action initiatives together to collectively amplify our strength!

I enjoyed the feeling of solidarity. There were similar themes emerging in the conversations that made me feel we weren’t alone and there was scope to work together to solve the issues we’re facing and continue to make meaningful progress.

Together, we unite in our shared commitment to flourishing communities, nurturing healthy ecosystems, and driving tangible climate action. Our collaborative efforts yield effective and impactful solutions to reduce climate pollution and build resilient communities.

In 2023, our Hui takes place post-election. This presents a strategic opportunity for us to ensure that whoever assumes office can benefit from our wealth of experience and knowledge, enabling the swift implementation of solutions. We invite our network members to share their stories and experiences, particularly in the wake of Cyclone Gabrielle, as vital lessons to inform our collective approach.

Our aim is to assemble a compelling message for the incoming government, one that echoes the urgency of sustainable action and underscores the critical need to learn from our collective experiences and fast-track transformative solutions. Together, we stand strong and united in this important endeavor.

We have a great line up of speakers, round-tables, project presentations and collaboration opportunities. Check out all details and programme here.

ZERO CARBON EVENT

Our Hui is proud to be a Ekos certified Zero Carbon Event. We are reducing the carbon impact of our event’s supply chain by measuring and offsetting the emissions caused by organisers and presenters travel, vehicle use, electricity and waste. This footprint excludes the travel of any participants. The certified carbon credits we are purchasing will be sourced from projects that grow and protect forests in New Zealand and the Pacific Islands and help to deliver climate resilience, waterways protection, erosion control, biodiversity conservation and community economic development.
